Blender Game Engine Tutorials - Season 2 Snapshots & Videos

Blender Game Engine Tutorials - Season 2 Snapshots & Videos

Postby djm » April 13th, 2014, 12:55 pm

Greetings everyone!

I have now been working on re-doing all my Season 2 Tutorial-episodes one by one (because of the "incident"). So, I thought I could share the snapshots with you lot in this thread along with a link (when the video from the snapshot has been uploaded). This thread will also work as a small little teaser since I am too lazy to make a trailer xD

Keep in mind though that the episodes will all be linked together. So, when you've watched all the episodes you will have your very own little mini-game to play and the knowledge to make it grow, or simply make a new game. It all comes down to the induvidual herself/himself. However, the snapshots will not be from the actual videos. The snapshots will be taken from my work-in-progress files I create before-hand. They will only show what said tutorial-part will be teaching, and nothing else (to keep the tutorial series spoiler free for those who are like me).

Links to a preview-video as well as a download for this game are at the bottom of this post!
I also added the tutorials at the bottom, bellow the DL-Links.

Here we go then! Enjoy!!

Blender Game Engine - Water
SHOW SPOILER
This here is the snapshot for Water in the Game Engine. Looks neat as a still.. But it will look very different when it's implemented to a game.

The spheres are there to show shadows, and what the water may look like on spherical objects.

Blender Game Engine - 2D in a 3D Environment
SHOW SPOILER
This right here is an image of a platformer, designed with 2D assets - but combined with 3D passets as well. The bushes, trees and backgrounds are all planes with a plain texture on top. The character and the rocks are in 3D. It's nothing fancy really as it is really simple and easy to do, but the combo 2D/3D can sometimes look really neat when executed properly.

Image

Blender Game Engine - Destructible Environment
SHOW SPOILER
Have you ever thought above those blocks characters like Mario in the old 2D-platformer games destroy by jumping beneath them? Well, I have and this is basically what I came up with.

Image

Blender Game Engine - Typical Basic Platformer-AI
SHOW SPOILER
This is a tree. An angry one at that.. And he will be your AI, for now. Basic, straight to the point.

Image

Blender Game Engine - New Props, a Fully Animated Slime-Thing
SHOW SPOILER
Just a quick update on the new props, the slime and yeah. More enemies to watch out for! And the level is pretty much coming to life now! :D

Image

Blender Game Engine - Effects, Moveable Objects
SHOW SPOILER
Soo.. You wanted to have some kind of effect from running around? Here you go, dust/smoke. You also wanted to be able to move objects? Here you go, a box which you can grab and move around as you wish. As of right now the box is far from finished.. (extremely buggy sometimes).

Image

Blender Game Engine - Easter Special (Eggs, Eggs.. and more Eggs)
SHOW SPOILER
Here, have some eggs!! Happy easter, everybody!

Image

Blender Game Engine - Damage, Sound, Game Over, Standalone Runtime
SHOW SPOILER
The final snapshot for my Blender Game Engine Season 2 Tutorials! The final part will cover Damage and Health systems, Game Over mechanics, Sound and last but not least.. How to export your game as a standalone .exe file (Runtime).

Links - Video + Download
SHOW SPOILER
Here's the "Season 2 content preview"-video:

Here's the Download link to the game (Windows ONLY, for now);

Thanks! I will post them as I go along reworking everything. I have even changed some topics on some the parts (like the "2D in a 3D environment" one).

I added a new one btw; "2D in a 3D Environment".

Video as soon as the YouTube biz is over with. My account is still "on hold" when it comes to uploading. I hope it will be gone by the end of this weekend though.. I really want to start uploading stuff again. -.-

Oh... Still not fixed??
Youtube needs to get their act together and support content creators rather than companies with millions to spare...

Yep. The thing I don't like is multiple short posts within moments of each other. There's no reason to bump the post when no one has had a chance to see it yet.

Back on topic though, the snapshots are looking pretty cool! I also shared this thread on the DS Facebook and Twitter accounts. :D

Thanks!! :D

Aaaaand I have added today's Snapshot!
It's of a tree. A very angry tree too. It will try to kill you for no good reason.. And it just so happens to be a very good example of a very basic, straight to the point, typical "platformer-AI".

EDIT: And since it's past 12pm here now I decided to add "tomorrow's" snapshot as well! I have been working on my artistic skills for a bit now as you can see with all the backgrounds, textures, props and what not. But today I also made a second enemy-type; Slimes. Animated, textured with a basic plain image (UV-mapped) and also a reflection-map to create the illusion of "goo". The animation itself also reminds the player that it is in fact a piece of slime walking about.

EDIT #2: I made another update. I have now added a snapshot showing you some effects from running and also moveable objects (a box in this case). The character can either push, or grab and move around with the box. I also changed my textures and made a new tileable set for the sides, the grass, the toprow on the side and also the box.

EDIT #3: Added an Easter Special. Yes.. it will be implemented in my little "snapshot game" and yes it will be included in the tutorials! (I actually skipped "shooting" in my old Season 2 vids..).

Hope you like it!

Loving the progress, I especially like the slime dude enemy. Almost looks friendly. :D
