DS Project Information

DS Project Information

Postby IrascibleOne » September 16th, 2011, 2:14 pm

Welcome to the main thread for the 2nd DS Community Project! Theoretically, it is from here where you will be able to find the current status of the project as well as other information about how you can get involved.

General DS Project Information
SHOW SPOILER
How does a DS Community Project Work?
The way this project works is quite simple. We have a topic we all go along with and everyone jumps on board to produce models, scenes, textures, lighting setups, etc. for the project. No one is assigned any particular jobs and anyone is allowed to propose any changes to the project as they please. Once the community approves of a proposal, it is officially added to the project files. Any changes will be made via another proposal.

What is a proposal? How do I make proposals?
A proposal is a suggested addition or change to make to the project. Anyone can make proposals. Proposals can range from changing the project topic and goals, to presenting a new model to the project, to suggesting minor changes to an existing model and so on.
To make a proposal, all you have to do is start a new thread in the community project sub-forum and state what your proposal is. Provide any related files. For example, if you created a model and would like it added to the project, just start a new thread including the .blend file along with a short little note about what the proposal is. In this example, you would just say you want to add the model to the project and how you think it should be added.

When is a proposal approved or disapproved?
There is no discrete point marking when a proposal is approved or disapproved. In general, it is basically whether the community agrees with the proposal or not. The more unanimous the community is about the proposal, the sooner a decision will be made. At some point, the admin or a moderator will officially approve a proposal by making the necessary updates to the project files.

When is a project considered complete?
As long as legitimate proposals are being presented, the project will live on. However, if one believes the project should be considered complete, it should be proposed to the community and the community will decide. A completion proposal should outline any final steps necessary to get the project in it's officially completed state.

Any other questions? Feel free to ask and I can add them here.

Project Files
SHOW SPOILER
Oh no! No files yet!

Project Topic and Goals
SHOW SPOILER
Current Topic: SciFi/Fantasy
Current Goals: Create a very high quality render of a science fiction/fantasy city.

Don't like the topic or goals we've set? Make a proposal and we might change it. However, keep in mind that the further we are into the project the harder it will be to make big changes.

*Jumps on board*

I think I can find the time, especially during weekdays (not weekends) to contribute to this.
My speciality: Modells, Textures, UV-mapping. :)

After september the 30th i might be able to spend some time on this, but im not to much for Scifi, i would prefer fantasy as it should be, magic and mythical creatures in lands of old ;) Plus, thats more of a modelling challenge, isnt it? more shapes and stuff ^^

Wowo, dint even know this was goin on!

mmk time to bolster up this project, and ask, exactly, what kind of
sci-fi scenario are we looking for here?

Are we looking into some sort of realistic city in the future which could be very possible?

Or something that we do not have the technology to make (such as flying houses, cars ... well everything even the city itself)

Or maybe something like an underground city (which i assume would play more into the 'fantasy' type)

I got on to google, and conjured up these images
to get some ideas runnin'

and my personal favorite:

Id start modelling but im not sure of what type of "mood" we are going for here

That's the great thing about how this is set up. There are no restrictions (other than the general topic), the community steers it the way it wants. So, really, do anything you like, make a proposal and we can comment and go from there. If you'd like it to go a certain direction, by all means start modeling in that direction.

Especially now, since so few people have time to contribute, you have a good chance to really steer us where ever you'd like us to go. Once a theme starts, I suspect everyone will follow.

This Idea is so awsome that I have joined Dark Scarab Just to be a part of it!
I think we shuld use this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szi48Q9Ave8&feature=player_embedded

lets all contact the people coding it and see if they will work with us,
there is a great deal for both parties to gain!

also I suggest that we use some 3d fractle object generating scripts to get the topography of our original city!

Looks like it can be done in blender

Is this still on?
Theres less activity going on here :P I might still be able to help out with this, but im still voting for fantasy rather than Sci-Fi(Fantasy is way more epic and awesome!)

Hey Brektzar can you do a quick ruff model of a Fancie style building that you like, dont spend to much time on it at first, Just start Really simple.

Then ill write a Python script that replicates the style with a little bit of randomization thrown in...

I have the feeling that scripting the beginning of the city is a must because it will reduce the hours spent modelling many many times.

I would be happy to take on this part of the project!

What do we want the focus to be? Right now it's pretty vague. We can make a city, but do we want to focus on just creating a skyline, or maybe just something where the city is more in the background? Maybe we just want to do a few buildings with a awesome fantasy style landscape with the fractals?

I personally really like the mashup between SciFi and Fantasy.

If we do a huge city, the Suicider City Generator could be used for buildings more in the background and we make our own buildings (like the one I posted a little while ago) for the ones we want to focus on more.

Couldnt we evlove his image? by adding a dark, dirty and overall depressing Sci-Fi city on half the screen versus a green luch fantasy village on the other half, merging them, robots versus elves and all he other fantasy stuff? ^^

I am personally more into the village scene in front of a green and very welcoming landscape, lots of warmth, and inviting to the viewers.
