Personal Information Research Project

Personal Information Research Project

Postby IrascibleOne » November 21st, 2012, 12:27 pm

For one of my classes I am doing a research project. My group chose to do a study of information websites ask for and how people really feel about it. One part of the research is a survey and we want as many people as possible to fill it out for us.

So, if you want to help out and fill out a ~10 minute survey, I'd really appreciate it. I know not many people are on the forum, but everyone counts! Link below:

Survey Here!

Thanks a bunch! <3

Sweet, thanks! I'll see about posting our findings when all is said and done. I've already noticed some juicy stuff and contradictory answers.

For instance, one person said they usually read the privacy policy/terms and conditions on the sites they frequent after saying they were not aware of them on the sites they frequent.

Completely forgot about this!

If I remember correctly, one part of our survey was to see if people's perception of private information had changed by comparing to an article from the year 2000 that asked the same questions. Other questions were to determine if people felt they knew what their information was used for and how they decided when to give up something they deem private.

I think the most interesting thing we walked away with how willing people were to giving up certain information now compared to 13 years ago. Other than the fact the people are less willing to share information across the board, the three highlighted ones in the image below really caught our eye.

Our guess as to why this is, is that people now have a heightened awareness of privacy issues now compared to back in 2000. This results in an increased need to prove your site is secure, trustworthy, and uses the provided information only for the main purpose of the site. Back it 2000, there was less information gathering, hacking, spamming, and fewer people trolling around, so people probably trusted other people on the internet more.

As more and more news breaks about breaches of privacy and hacking schemes and as our information on the internet get more important to our lives, I would think these numbers will continue to drop.

Like the others in that list, it was asking if you were willing to share you gender with websites in general. The original article did not ask if people were willing to tell sites what their gender was, hence the N/A. So, 69% of people are usually or always willing to share their gender with websites in general.

Although, since you mentioned it, I thought the gender split of the survey was interesting: 52% who responded were Male, 43% were Female, and 5% were other.
